If they don’t register, they will not be qualified for any of the programs, including future immigration.   At registration, they must have some evidence that would corroborate when they came here.

Certainly such a program should be considered as we take steps to control our border to the south.

I doubt that most Americans want to see us deport those immigrants who have been employed, paying taxes and living among us for at least the past five years or so.

Given an opportunity to emerge from the shadows and to achieve a possible path to full citizenship I think should prove to be an opportunity that most illegal immigrants in our midst would embrace.

At any rate such a registration would give us some information and some numbers to work with rather than depending on speculation.

Whatever happened to the illegal immigrant problem?
Oh, yes….the Senate approved a bill that would create a seven hundred mile long fence along portions of the Mexican border, but there apparently is a question of how to fund the construction.
Other than that little has been done on the question.
Let’s see now….how many illegal immigrants are there in our midst?
Well come estimate 18 million…..others 16 million...some even less at 12 million...and few estimate more than 18 million.   How many are there, really?
No one seems to know and little effort is being exerted to determine first how many there are…..what problems do they pose….and what should we do with them?
Everyone seems to agree that first we need to close our borders not only to keep illegals out, but to protect our nation from terrorists.
A long time ago...when the illegals were marching in our major cities I suggested that perhaps we need a census count.  I realize that many of the illegals in our midst might not want to register for fear of being deported, but certainly we need to know how many are here illegally before we take any action.
Congress should, but they won’t, so let’s say the Interior Department should set up a registration period when those here illegally could file with their county or state governments, perhaps listing when they came, who they are, where are they employed and other issues.   They should be assured that they will not be immediately deported, but that if they don’t register, they will certainly be deported when discovered.
Then a date could be determined….let’s say those here for at least the past five years could be given an opportunity to apply for citizenship at a future date.  Those here less than five years could register to be included in a workers’ quota or be placed on the immigration list for legal entry in the future.

If they don’t register, they will not be qualified for any of the programs, including future immigration.   At registration, they must have some evidence that would corroborate when they came here.
