What would you tell a group of students who were graduating.
After all, it is that time of year when graduation is the big thing, and
speakers galore offer them all kinds of advice.
What would you tell them?
What would I tell them?
First.....it’s a challenging world they’re stepping into...whether its
graduating from high school or college.
It’s a much smaller world than I graduated from so very many years ago. About
the only thing in common was the fact that another war was in the offing...one
that wound up as World War Two.
Today’s grads are not facing a universal draft where they must face the
possibility of going into the military. However, the war in Iraq is being fought
by our professional soldiers, men and women, and our national guard units.
The major question would be.....what do I want to do with my life.
Today’s world is still full of challenges. Our technological world seems to move
ahead so quickly that today’s gadgets are outmoded by tomorrow.
Changes are constant in the all fields of science, medicine, yes, and space
exploration just to name a few. They all require a need for not just education,
but specialized education.
However, my single advice to any graduate today would be simply: You can be what
you want to be.
That sounds terribly simplistic, but in our society virtually anything is
possible, if one is willing to dedicate the time and effort to accomplish
whatever goal they set out to do.
There comes a time in every life when one has to determine what kind of a future
do they want.
Certainly there are limitations, but it is all the more important that one take
stock of one’s own abilities as well as ambitions...and set their goals
accordingly.
Sounds easy.....well, ask most high school grads and even those about to leave
College...what do you want to become....and in too many cases you will get an
answer....like, well I don’t know.
Those who will find great success in our world today are those who determine at
an early age what they really want out of life. Thus the phrase.....you can be
what you want to be.
I realize that all graduates today will listen to speakers who urge them to get
educated, become good active citizens, get a job...and on and on.
But.....if there is one cardinal rule that I could leave with them it would
be..as I said......You can be what you want to be. In other words your future is
up to you.....
