While the nation has been wrapped up in a nasty Presidential election a very important issue has arisen that greatly affects the future of this country.

It’s the issue of relations with Russia.   Our relationship with the Soviets had been deteriorating but then came Russia’s invasion of Georgia and now its’ continued occupation of that democratic country.

Shortly an effort will be made to accept Georgia into NATO.   Theoretically that would give them great support in the event Russia makes more moves on its neighbors. But…..an even bigger issue faces this country in Venezuela in South America. Hugo Chavez who was once elected President of Venezuela is now its’ dictator and that country has moved to put all industry including the oil industry into government hands. After all, we buy oil from Venezuela. A few days ago, Chavez booted U.S. representatives out of his country. We retaliated by doing the same to them.

In open  defiance, Chavez invited and welcomed Russian bombers to come to Venezuela which they have. It is not known whether or not they carry any nuclear equipment to sell to Chavez. At any rate this move by the Soviets was followed by the information that a Russian fleet, headed by an Atomic Nuclear Cruiser was heading for Venezuela. All that spells future trouble. Chavez has utilized his oil revenues in efforts to destablilize his neighboring nations.

Those of us who are a bit older can well remember the attempt to overthrow Castro in Cuba back in 1961 in the Bay of Pigs fiasco. We all well remember when the Russians began to construct missile sites in Cuba aimed at this country, and President John Kennedy denounced the actions and declared that if any missile were fired from Cuba the U.S. would respond with missiles against Russia. Russian ships with missiles were already on the road to Cuba, but at Kennedy’s declaration they turned back and a missile crisis was averted.

The Russian visit to Venezuela may just be a counter move against our strong support for Georgia, or it may be a serious effort to insert Soviet influence into our backyard. Either way…..it bears close attention, and certainly borders on an attack on our centuries old Monroe declaration that we will not tolerate attempts to control any countries in this hemisphere by a foreign government.

At any rate…...these recent actions are an ominous warning for the future.
