The recent onslaught of the Russians against Georgia raises the specter of Adolph Hitler and the days of World War Two. Hitler first moved into the Ruhr Valley which he maintained belonged to Germany rightfully. The move was unopposed militarily and it led to the beginning of World War Two.

Even after the end of that war Russia launched a prohibition against any air lift and eventually constructed a huge wall to keep the Germans in and everyone else out. In the end that, too, was torn down and Germany is now a free nation.

There was also the question of the future of such places as Czechoslovakia and parts of Poland against the Russian reach. Nations bordering on Russia  were able to separate themselves from the Soviet Union.   Nations like Ukraine, yes and Poland, along with the three small nations to the north of Russia…..Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, also gained their independence while the Russians saw a breakup of their socialist soviet Republic.   Hopes were that democracy would truly take hold on Russia.

Now comes the military assault against Georgia.

Obviously all America can do is maintain public support for Georgia and wonder why the Russians have taken the course they have. We have moved to complete the agreement with Poland to construct a missile defense system aimed mainly at the troubled middle east.   Russia has warned that such a move might bring a nuclear response.

It is time for a divided Europe to come together in putting some teeth into its Euro nation and prepare militarily for the future. Russia has been a diplomatic problem in a number of ways lately.

They have used their veto in the U.N. to thwart efforts at getting nations like North Korea and Iran to give up their nuclear ability.

The one area that has had good cooperation between the U.S. and the Russians is in the area of space.    Much of the supplies for the giant space station are hoisted up by the Russian Soyez. The program has called for a halt in future visits by our own spacecraft, and dependence on the Russian vessel to carry those supplies.    The newest American space vessel will not be available for a few years.

All of these issues have caused a great deal of investigation, and the world will be watching to see if the Georgian incident is the end of any Russian expansion program.
