Congratulations to the Herald and News and their new building .
A large crowd was present last Saturday for the grand opening of the new facilities on the Hillside Boulevard.
Proper congratulations were voiced by many of our local representatives and special talks by Senator Gordon Smith and Governor Kulongoski
It took quite some time to carve the hillside space for the new structure which includes some very impressive office space as well as a huge new press that represents the very latest in printing.
Also recognized were those who had been subscribers of the newspaper for more than fifty years.
The new facility is about the fifth or sixth that the newspaper has occupied over the past century.
The building that they just exited was built in the late 1960s on the same spot that a newspaper called The Northwestern first constructed it back in 1912.
As I’ve noted before the Herald and News is a conjunction of two newspapers...one the Morning Herald and the other the Evening News. Prior to its sale to the Scripps League in 1960 it was owned by the Southern Oregon Publishing Company with Frank Jenkins the Publisher. They had bought the two papers from Bruce Dennis who had acquired both of them a year earlier.
It was during World War Two that newsprint became scarce and Jenkins joined the two papers into the current Herald and News.
I joined the organization in 1948 with the Radio Station KFLW, and when it was sold became city editor of the Herald and News.
It was back in what they called the “hot metal” days when chaises of type were engraved in metal and attached to the presses. It took quite a bit of metal back in those days, but the press wasn’t that big or versatile.
The current press unveiled last Saturday has taken advantage of the computer age but is many times larger than the earlier hot metal presses.
I was privileged to work for the Scripps family back during my tenure as Editor-Publisher of the Petaluma Argus Courier. Many of the family were also honored at Saturday’s event.
There is no question but that the new plant is a giant investment in the future of this area. It is important to note that the current editions strongly mirror activities in a broad area including such places as Lakeview, Alturas as well as our nearby localities.
Again our congratulations to Heidi Wright the current publisher and the Scripps family for their huge investment in the future of this area.
