Well we had flights going north but as of October we apparently only will have flights going south.
Almost all the major airlines across the country are trimming their routes and blaming it on the price of gasoline.
After all they remind the public that they are privately owned and obligated to show a profit. That apparently is leaving the smaller destinations out and creating a big hitch in travel plans,.
Horizon also maintains that the addition of a southbound flight that goes to Sacramento is partly responsible for the cut in services to Klamath Falls. In the past, people who wanted to travel south had to either fly first to Portland on Horizon and then catch a flight south, or some traveled by car to Medford where they could get transportation south.
At one time a number of years ago there were three airlines flying out of here. You could fly in any direction.
It’s estimated that hundreds of cities nationwide are being dropped by the major airlines and that’s a shame. However, it is another example of how the price of gasoline has forced and is forcing\ all of us to change our way of living.
Whether actually or not,,,,,the terrorists have found the weapon that can bring our nation nearly to its knees…….gasoline. It’s not a situation that just appeared…...it’s been happening over the years as the percentage of oil we received from other nations has risen sharply. While this was going on we stopped most drilling off Florida, most portions of the Atlantic for one reason or another.
Now we have a Congress that flippantly responds to the issue by reporting the oil companies have plenty of area to dig in the Rocky Mountain area.
Honestly it’s a \true case of Nero fiddling while Rome burned. Do we think magically that other artificial means to run our nation’s planes and automobiles will automatically appear in such shape and numbers that we won’t need gasoline?
Curtailing our access to air travel is just the beginning. Already there is serious talk about cutting back our top speed to 55 miles per hour even on the expressways. The answer probably will be Congress passing a law that every new vehicle must provide at least 50—60 or even more per gallon. Perhaps our airlines could drop their average speed.
Locally, however, maybe Horizon could schedule less flights into the smaller areas such as ours, cutting the size of the planes to fit the needs. There is no question, indeed, that we will badly miss those flights to Portland. Perhaps we could offer them access to our federal oil stockpile….or better yet get something done cracking on digging up more oil of our own.
I’m still hopeful that something will change and we can still schedule Horizon for those Portland trips.
