The current kidnapping of 15 British servicemen by Iran is just another ploy by a desperate country.
However, in case you have forgotten this is a familiar action by Iran. Back in the 1980s Iran took over the American embassy and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. An effort by President Jimmy Carter to free them ended in disaster in the Iranian desert.
It wasn’t until President Ronald Reagan became President that they were freed. Speaking prior to his election in 1981 Reagan promised if elected he would take military action to free them.
Even as Reagan was being sworn in as President, Iran freed the 52 prisoners. By design or coincidence the plane freeing them did not take off until moments after Reagan became President.
Now….let’s not forget either that in September 1984 the Islamic Holy War Terrorists bombed the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, killing 23.
Again in June 1985 39 Americans held hostage in Beirut were freed when the U.S. sent a message that a commando unit was being sent to the area. One of the perpetrators said “we’d all be dead men if a commando unit was dispatched and they freed the 39.
Remember who much criticism President Bush received when he labeled Syria, Iran and North Korea three terrorist states. Well, President Reagan said the same thing in 1985. He cited Iran, Libya, North Korea, Cuba and Nicaragua as a “confederation of terrorists,” He further said:
“The American People are not ...I repeat not...going to tolerate intimidation, terror and outright acts of war against this nation and its people. And we are especially not going to tolerate these attacks from outlaw states run by the strangest collection of misfits, Looney Tunes, and squalid criminals since the advent of the Third Reich.”
In 1986 after warning Libys’s Muammar Khadafy about its terrorist activities…..Reagan ordered an aerial assault on Khadafy that narrowly missed killing the Libyan leader by seconds, but from that time on Khadafy had not been a problem.
Then, of course, came the Berlin wall and his admonition to Khruschev to “Tear Down this wall.” I can well remember at the time that much of the news media made comments such as the President was falling asleep at meetings, and on and on.
Now….we have another incident where this time British naval personnel had been kidnapped. It will be interesting to see how far Tony Blair will go to free them.
I do know that if they had been Americans…..President Bush would well have taken a page from Ronald Reagan . True we are deeply involved in Iraq, but we still have two carrier squadrons available just off Iranian waters.
· At some point this make believe Hitler in Iran has to be stopped.
