Well they did it!
We’ve learned to expect big things from the Oregon Tech Owls under the great tutelage of Danny Miles, but winning the national title for the second time…..boy, that was something.
Over the years Oregon Tech has grown not only as a great technical college, but also as a powerhouse in the world of basketball.
Tuesday’s victory over Bellevue was not only a glorious conclusion to another season of basketball, but it also brought great honors to the Klamath Falls area, as no other event seems to do.
It also marks the 847th victory for coach Dan Miles. He’s well on the road to that celebrated coaching level of 900 victories that only a select few coaches in the nation have ever reached. This victory and his more than four decades of victories is a true indicator of his coaching prowess.
Season after season he begins a new year with some vets and some new members and fashions them into a championship team.
In his earlier coaching years I was privileged to do the play by play of the Owls as they were a potent force even back in those early years. Walt Badorek did the color and I did the play by play and we thoroughly enjoyed the association with Miles and the Owls.
Bobby Thomson did a good job of bringing the word vision of the team to the fans, and needless to say we hung on as the game narrowed in the final seconds.
A welcome home for the Owls is scheduled for 6:30 tonight at the Oregon Tech gym.
And rightfully so, Dan Miles was named coach of the year. As a tribute to his coaching skills the Owls entered the tournament as a number 11 seed, and then proceeded to capture the title for the second time. Ryan Fiegi, a team leader during the season, captured the most valuable play award.
Again, our great compliments to Coach Dan Miles and the Championship Oregon Teach Owls…….what a finish!
