Would you like to be President of the United States?

In the olden days it was an ideal dream to some day grow up and become the President of the United States.

Today…..as one hears the constant criticism of the current President on just about any and every issue….one would have to admit that the goal of someday being the President has lost a lot of its glory.

We find a number of candidates from both political parties already positioning themselves to get the nomination from their party sometime early in 2008 and currently stumping the country although the election itself is many months away.

Well….first let’s see what the qualifications for President are.  The constitution says:  No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States , at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President;  neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.”

Pretty simple language, right?

Well it really isn’t quite that simple.

In today’s political world one must first be able to raise many millions of dollars to conduct a campaign.  Back before the turn of the century, the candidates for President didn’t even campaign.  They had individuals and groups that did the campaigning for them.   They stayed home and made a few brief statements from their front porch.

Today a candidate must virtually stump the entire 50 states.  Not only that but their past record...even including perhaps their views of activities as far back as grade school…..will be open sesame to the whims of the press.

In addition to that, he or she will have to take positions on current issues of the day….such today as the Iraq War, abortion, civil rights and on and on.  The media will be combing the record for any speeches of comments you might have made at any time.

Then comes the question of which group is supporting the candidacy. The unions, special interests….and on and on.

Speculation currently is busy labeling the current avowed candidates for the Presidency…..are they conservative….liberal…..progressive, and even in some instances what color or what religion are they.

Then….if elected…..the criticism begins.

First...in office...your time is not your own anymore.  The oval office is purely a decision making position.  Now...you’d head up an organization consisting of thousands of employees in hundreds of different departments, and you will have to rely on others to run them correctly.

Each day will present a series of new problems and they generally are problems that can’t wait.  You must assemble the best information you can from your subordinates...then make a judgment call.  In either case...you must expect much criticism because that’s the nature of the nation’s media….not what is good, but what is bad.

So….now….do you still want to be the President of the United States?

Well, to date, thankfully there have been 42 persons who have been willing to run for that office.  I say 42 because one man, Grover Cleveland became President at two different times.

Next time you read about the errors this President made….put yourself in his shoes…...what decision would have have made.
