Most of the media will be resurrecting Pearl Harbor and reviewing the events of World War Two. If you are older, you probably remember that Sunday….some 65 years ago…..and I do.
But let’s talk about today’s war, today’s conflict in Iraq.
There is so much advice and counter advice floating around about what we should do or didn’t do in Iraq that it’s difficult to understand just what the future holds for that war.
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld sent a memo to the President on the eve of the recent election, expressing much the same frustrations of most Americans on the apparent lack of progress in that deadly conflict.
Also, recently, we witnessed what appeared to be a purposeful snub of President Bush by the Iraqi Prime Minister when they were set to meet in Jordan. They held a brief news conference but revealed little of what they talked about.
We see the President of Iraq visiting both the leaders of Syria and Iran, apparently pleading with them to hold up on supporting the terrorists in Iraq.
Meantime...the senseless slaughter goes on despite all the military efforts to quell such mayhem, particularly in Baghdad itself. The report from the committee doesn’t set a deadline for troop withdrawal, but does suggest that our forces be pulled back into more defensive positions. It also recommends that training of Iraq forces be stepped up. There appears to be little disagreement on the part of President Bush.
The sharp disagreement with the Commission on the part of the President comes with the suggestion that he hold personal conferences with the leaders of both Iran and Syria on their support for the terrorists in Iraq.
Unquestionably such talks would immediately bring up the question of atomic activity of Iran, the issue of the Israeli-Palestinian dispute as well as the future of such places as Lebanon.
The Iranian leader has called for the destruction of Israel and continued on his path to securing a nuclear weaponry despite United Nations threat of sanctions.
It’s obvious that Iran is intent on becoming the super power of the middle east with visions of a huge Islamic nation embodying Iran , Iraq, Syria and Lebanon among others. It would become a hotbed for terrorist attacks directly against the United States.
It has become clear that the struggle in Iraq is one of power. The Sunis who represent 30 percent of the population, enjoyed total control under Hussein. Now they are a minority and supported by the terrorists among them are battling to regain power.
The months ahead will determine the future role of our troops in Iraq.
Democrats will now control the wheels of power, including that of proper funding, in the Congress, and it remains to be seen what they will support.
We note that Nancy Pelosi has appointed a person to chair the House Intelligence Committee who opposed the war and has backed a withdrawal.
Certainly, all this confusion about the future of our role in Iraq is not very comforting for the men and women putting their lives on the line right now in that conflict. They must be assured that their government will not desert them, but give them whatever they need. Time will tell.
