Well it’s just a few days to election…..have you voted?

The airwaves are filled with mostly what I call diatribe...charges and counter charges as candidates vie to get elected.

I think that the advent of television and now the computer with its propensity to blogs has served to throw the election process into a vitriolic situation.   Gone are the arguments about capability and future plans….now it’s become a game of gotcha.

One must wonder how people outside America view the sacred rite of elections in this country.   We certainly are not setting good examples of what democracy is all about.

All we hear from the pundits...or the national media is that the Democrats will take over Congress and things will change dramatically.

In all innocence I might ask how…..how will it change?

Bush bashing has been the mode of the foes of the current administration.   Let’s take a look at the picture.

Iraq seems to be the main issue of dissension.  No question but what the situation in Iraq is critical at the moment.   Sectarian violence continues almost unabated while the nation’s prime minister, a Shiite, continues to push for Shiite domination rather than seeking a compromise with the Sunnis, the source of much of the violence.   The goals listed by President Bush a few days ago struck a harsh note for the Iraqi leader, but one he must follow if true democracy is ever to come to his nation.   Now….what would the opposition do if they gain power?  Some say “cut and run”, others say withdraw gradually….but where is the solution?

Look at the economy…..unemployment is at its lowest point in the nation’s history…...the stock market is in new high ground…..business appears to be prospering…...what would the opposition do differently about that?

Now….let’s take taxes.  The tax cuts engineered by President Bush are scheduled to end in 2008 unless renewed.  The opposition has indicated they

Would not renew them…..meaning increased taxes for all income levels.

On  another front….opposition leaders have said they would launch impeachment proceedings against President Bush if they gain control.  It takes a two thirds vote in the House to approve such action...and needs further concurrence of the Senate.  In other words it would be an exercise in futility….but certainly would encourage not only the terrorists in Iraq, but others around the world.

Even as it is now….Congress has been stymied at almost every turn by the opposition of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reed.   The filibuster has been a buzz-word that has controlled the actions of both the House and the Senate.

Ever since the battle over Supreme Court nominees it has required 60 votes in the Senate for confirmation….not just 51 because of the filibuster.  That threat has dictated virtually all actions in the Congress.

Admittedly I’m a Republican, but first I am an America….one who has served his country militarily, and his community as well.  The unceasing criticism of the administration is not only reprehensible, but is damaging, in my opinion, to most other peoples of the world who hitherto have looked to America as the symbol of liberty and free speech.

But….in the final analysis, you, the voter, hold the future of your nation in your hands…...cast your vote.
