This is Floyd Wynne with THE VIEW FROM HERE.

2007 is just getting underway…..time to take a look back at 2006 and ahead to the new year.

Last January we listed some of the things we hoped would happen in 2006.  Some of them did.  For instance….the shopping center has undergone some great changes with Gottschalks and Thunderbird Market and more in the works.

The Jeld-Wen gated subdivision was given a second chance and got city council approval.

Merle West Medical Center continues to move ahead and will provide a great new medical center for the area.

On the national scene….Iraqi did form a national government although it’s future is now in serious doubt.

One we missed….we hoped the Republicans would continue to control Congress…...they didn’t and we’re in for two years of political upheaval.

Now….looking ahead at the rest of this year.

First we’d like to see Congress reauthorize the federal in lieu funds for the County.   Those funds represent a great deal not only to the county budget, but also to the schools of our area.   One would hope the county would go slowly on its proposed new road proposal.

We’d like to see the Consolidation that the city and county schools have talked about proceed.   Now that additional school funds appear to be available at the state level….consolidation talks seemingly have disappeared.  We hope, though, that they materialize.

We also hope that the proposed development by Timber Shores on the edge of Lake Ewauna proceed apace this year and that construction gets underway on a project that would greatly aid the local economy.

While it appears that residential construction is underway with a number of new developments planned, the growth only emphasizes the need for additional industry or job producing projects in the area.

The proposed ethanol plant would be a good beginning….but we need more than that.   It is hoped that the environmentalists back off an d permit more logging…..along with the continuation of water to our farmers.

We’d also like to see more honors for Oregon Tech.  More honors certainly would be good in the basketball field with Coach Danny Miles pushing that win figure nearer the 900 mark.  Also….hope the plans for additional programs and construction continue for OIT.

Also….while we’re thinking about it…..I’d like to see the street lighting on South Sixth Street be activated in the county owned section of the area.

It gets mighty dark out there after you pass Washburn Way at nig ht.

Well…..if just those five or six things get done during this year….it will mean we have made good progress in preparing for the future.
