Sometimes you just shake your head in bewilderment about things. Specifically, the City of Klamath Falls and, of all things, waterfalls.
For the last few months, I have watched as the City installed a new waterfall and landscaping project downtown. First they cut out the cement sidewalk, then ran water connections, then brought in rock and shrubs and finally go the project running, and it looks nice, although it seems like someone is working on this waterfall almost on a daily basis.
Here's the part that is really puzzeling, they did all this work in front of a building that has an abandoned second floor with plywood over the windows and a rather unattractive exterior. Plus it is right across the street from the former Cell Tech building which is vacant and full of broken windows.
Now I give you this example to point out an even more puzzeling situation. At Veteran's Park, the main feature is a very large fountain....a very large fountain that doesn't work. As a matter of fact, it has more or less been abandoned to kids with skateboards. Why doesn't the City fix this fountain.....I don't know.
Consider this, they may have to repair or replace the concrete and put in new water lines. That shouldn't be a problem, they have been almost fanatical in demanding property owners in the City rip out and replace cement sidewalks they find substandard and demanding new sidewalks be constructed, all at the property owners expense. So why can't the City do it as well?
Second, perhaps they need a new pump for the fountain. So....it certainly would be less expensive than the money they have spent on the small waterfall they just built downtown.
Also, the local Rotary Club is planning to spend thousands of dollars to place fountains in Lake Ewuana and much time, effort and dollars are being expended to work on the South Portal project to lure travelers off Highway 97 into downtown....for what.....to see a fountain we have in Veteran's Park that doesn't work? Hmmmmmm.
Finally, what about the Klamath Falls, which is also a fountain that is right across the street from Veteran's Park. It has a sign proclaiming it is there but it doesn't run. The Kiwanis Club is involved as well, but the situation remains unsolved, either fix it....or remove it....but for goodness sakes, don't build yet another fountain or waterfall without fixing the ones the City currently has.
As I said, sometimes you just shake your head.
